About Freelance Web Developer Stewart Doxey

Twenty years building for the web. The first ten were agency-side - hundreds of projects, every kind of client, every kind of deadline. It was a solid foundation, but I always knew where I was heading.

Seven years ago I went full-time freelance. Not because the work dried up or because I got made redundant. Because the best conversations I had were always with the business owners themselves - and I wanted more of that. No project managers relaying messages. No six-person email chains where the brief gets diluted by the time it reaches the person actually building the thing.

When you work with me, you talk to me. I write the code, I make the technical decisions, and I'm the one who picks up your email. That directness is the whole point.

How I work

Hiring a freelancer can feel like a leap of faith. These are the things I do to make sure it never feels that way:

Everything goes through email.
Every decision, every piece of feedback, every file - all in one searchable thread. You'll never have to wonder where that conversation went or chase me for an update. Nothing gets lost.
I work Monday to Thursday
Fridays I invest back into the business - learning new techniques, staying across platform updates, refining how I work. That's time I spend getting better at the thing you're paying me to do.
You'll hear back by the end of the next working day.
That's not a rough guide - it's a commitment. You'll always know where things stand without having to ask.
I handle the full process, including design.
I work with a trusted designer here in Sheffield. You brief me, I coordinate everything, and you deal with one person from first conversation to launch day. No juggling multiple contacts or chasing separate threads.

Who I Work With

I work best with business owners who are close to the decisions. Founders who can look at a build in progress and say "yes, that's right" or "no, change this" without scheduling a committee meeting first. That direct relationship is where the best work happens - and where projects stay on track.

Agencies trust me too. I've been a go-to development partner for several well-known agencies for over a decade - the kind of relationship where they send their most important client work my way.

What I Build With

PHP is the foundation of everything I build. For e-commerce, that means Shopify and WooCommerce - two platforms I know inside out from years of building stores that actually convert. For bespoke websites and web applications, I work with Laravel, using Statamic or Filament for content management. I pick the right tool for what your project needs, not the one I happen to prefer this week.
